Going live from the browser

Hosts go live with the camera and microphone of the computer or phone they're on, and can share their screen. For scenes and overlays, stream from OBS instead.

Where hosts go live

  • Live Stream → Studio, in the WordPress admin. Its Studio tab lists the streams you host; choose Go live beside one to open its studio.
  • The admin bar. On a page showing a stream you host, Go live in the admin bar opens its studio.
  • The stream's page, where the page has the Stream studio block or [easy_stream_studio id="12"]. Only the stream's hosts see it; everyone else sees nothing there. See Putting a stream on a page.

Administrators host every stream.

Going live

  1. Open the stream's studio. Its picture says "Ready when you are".
  2. Choose "Turn on camera and microphone". Your browser asks for the camera and the microphone the first time. Until you go live the picture is a preview: only you see it.
  3. Set up. Choose the camera, the microphone and the speakers (where the browser lets a page choose them). The microphone's level moves as you speak. On a phone, switch between the front and the back camera.
  4. Choose the quality (below).
  5. Countdown. "Count down 3, 2, 1 before going live" shows a countdown over the picture, which you can stop. Switch it off to go live at once.
  6. Press Go live.

The studio remembers your camera, microphone, speakers and quality in this browser.

The studio while live: the host's camera, the statistics, the controls and the chat beside them

While you're live

  • The bar under the picture: the microphone and the camera, each with a menu of devices; Share screen; More, with Stream from OBS; and End stream.
  • The statistics: time on air, how many watch and their peak, messages, reactions and the connection. Under them, how your picture goes out, such as "720p · 30 fps · 1.4 Mbps".
  • Beside the picture: the Chat, and the Stream tab, with its link to share.
  • Shortcuts: ⌘/Ctrl+D turns the microphone on and off, ⌘/Ctrl+E the camera.
  • Staying live: the studio keeps the screen awake, and asks before you leave the page.

The viewer count counts the audience only: you aren't in it.

Sharing your screen

Press Share screen and choose a screen, a window or a tab; Stop sharing ends it. The screen goes out no larger than the quality you chose, at 30 frames a second.

From another window

If you open the stream's page, or a second studio, while you're live, that window shows the stream as everyone sees it and sends nothing: "You're live from another window."

Quality

Before going live, Best quality offers:

ChoiceUpload it needs
720p · HDUp to about 4 Mbps
1080p · Full HDUp to about 8 Mbps

It is the best the stream sends, not what every viewer gets. Each viewer gets the picture their player's size and connection need, so a phone gets less than a big screen. While nobody watches in a big window or full screen, less goes out, and the statistics say so ("720p of 1080p").

Viewers can also choose the quality in the player's settings: Auto, which follows the player's size and their connection, or Medium or Low to save data.

Ending the stream

Press End stream, then End for everyone. Everyone watching sees that it has ended and how long it ran. The studio then sums it up: time on air, the most watching at once, the messages and the reactions. You can go live again with the same stream later.
